About Alliance Francaise de Providence
Alliance Française de Providence is a premier French language and cultural center serving Providence, RI and the surrounding Rhode Island community. Since 1901, the organization has provided comprehensive French language instruction through its dedicated Language Center, offering structured courses and conversation programs for learners of all levels. The Providence chapter operates fall, winter, and spring class schedules designed to accommodate busy schedules, with instruction beginning in September and continuing through March. Beyond traditional classroom learning, Alliance Française de Providence enriches the community through cultural and social events throughout the year, including conversation clubs, film screenings, cultural celebrations, and social gatherings. The organization coordinates with other French-speaking institutions across Rhode Island to present major cultural events during Francophone Month, featuring activities such as Francofête, flag-raising ceremonies, international cinema, and seasonal celebrations. With over 250 active members and an extended reach to 2,500 community members through social media, the Providence chapter maintains strong connections within the local cultural landscape. As an independent nonprofit corporation governed by a volunteer French-American Board of 18 Directors, Alliance Française de Providence operates without government funding and sustains itself through membership dues, Language Center revenue, and community fundraising efforts. The organization holds 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, making all donations tax-deductible. As the third Alliance Française chapter established in North America, the Providence location represents part of the world's largest network of French language and cultural centers, with over 800 chapters in 136 countries.
